There are a few
traditions in everyone's life. One of ours is to take a couple of
weeks in September and get out of Dodge. We like to wait until the
kids are back in school. That way, we don't plug up campgrounds that
families might like to use during summer break, and we can usually
get a campsite more easily.
So, off we went yesterday to explore central and east central Oregon. In the afternoon, we checked into the Creekside Campground in Sisters. We stayed here about 3 years ago and fell in love with the little gateway to the east side of the Cascade Mountains that this town represents. The campground is lovely, with lots of Ponderosa pines, a creek running through the park and nice level RV spaces. We are parked in #19 until tomorrow morning, when we will move on.
On Hwy 26 east of Salem
Detroit Lake, one of our favorites.
We had forgotten that there was quite a burn in the forest along Hwy 22 a few years back.
More of the burned area...eerily beautiful.
Now, in addition to
a lovely campground, which is owned and operated by the city of
Sisters, the town itself (pop. ~2,000) has an ambience that is best
described as “friendly neo-Old West.” Two of our favorite,
mustn't miss stops are the Sisters Bakery, which offers, bar none,
the best bear claws extant, and the Sisters Coffee Company, which
roasts and serves magnificent coffee. The two are a couple of blocks
apart, so we walk to town from the park, pick up a bear claw (one is
big enough for both of us to share) and walk over to the coffee
company. There we pick out a table on the patio, near the water
feature, and enjoy our morning brew and pastry. Life doesn't get
much better.
Today, we took the
dogs with us. They loved the walk and were very well behaved. They
sat quietly at our feet while we enjoyed our morning repast. When we
got back to the park, they were well exercised and ready for a nap.
As much as we love
the Sisters experience, we will be moving on tomorrow to places we
have only read about. Stay tuned for further adventures.
