A room with a view

On our way to San Diego, we have made it to Crescent City. The day provided amazingly easy driving, with lots of sunshine and just a few light rain showers. Here is the view from Topper's back door.

This trip is dual purpose. We are planning to spend Christmas with our daughter and her family. But first and foremost we are anxious to meet our new grandson, Malachi. He was born on Wednesday, and if you want an unbiased opinion, he is gorgeous. See if you don't agree:

Tomorrow it is on to Nice, CA (no, not nice, Nice, like in France). We stayed there in August on our way to celebrate our other grandsons' (Malachi's brothers) birthdays. The RV park sits on the shore of Clear Lake, which was very low on water in August. It will be interesting to see how much it has filled up with the latest rains that have hit northern California. Stop back to see what we find.

The Story of Topper

In 2006, we decided to buy an RV. We were approaching retirement, and with a daughter in Denver and one in San Diego, we thought that it would be nice to take leisurely trips to visit them, sightseeing along the way. We owned a Ford F150, so the first idea I had was a truck camper. I quickly learned that, as popular as they are, F150s are not "real" trucks. That is, they have a pretty limited load capacity.

We started researching RVs and visiting dealers, and eventually bought a travel trailer. With no experience in the field, we chose poorly, where floor plan was concerned. About a year later, we made the mistake of going to an RV show, where we became enamored of Class A motor homes. Later that year, we purchased a 20 year old cream puff of a motor home.

Now, we find ourselves retired empty nesters with four vehicles, to wit: the motor home, a small car that we tow behind the motor home and which doubles as my daily driver, my wife's daily driver/road car, and a different F150, which we use for various projects around home and with friends and family. We realized recently that life could be so much simpler. And so, we come full circle.

With a bit of RV experience under our belts, we decided to sell the towed car, the motor home and the F150, move up to a beefier pickup and do our "camping" in a truck camper. We will keep the wife's daily driver, and I can use the pickup as mine.

Thus, Topper, a 2002 ALP Adventurer 100WSB, has become part of our family. We look forward to many happy hours exploring in our compact "piggy-back home."

We chose the name Topper, because, of course, she rides on top of a pickup. But in addition to that, our taste in movies is romantic comedies from the '30s and '40s. The "Topper" movies are among our favorites, including "Topper Takes a Trip."
